STEPHAN CRUMP’S ROSETTA TRIO – “THWIRL” – (Sunnyside)
(Bassist, with his eight year-running trio featuring Liberty Ellman on acoustic guitar and Jamie Fox on electric guitar, with each member in lockstep on ten originals of calm intensity).
DAWN OF MIDI – “ DYSNOMIA” – (Thirsty Ear)
(Post-minimalist acoustic trio paying homage to electronica with 46 minutes of methodically composed music).
(New York-based trumpeter and regular member of Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, leads a quintet consisting of four straight-ahead originals and five standards).
VIJAY IYER & MIKE LADD – “HOLDING IT DOWN: THE VETERANS’
DREAM PROJECT” – (PI Recordings)
(Grammy-nominated pianist collaborating with poet/performer Mike Ladd. Both explore the experiences of American veterans of these post 9/11 wars through a combination of music, poetry and song, each created from actual dreams of veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars).
(Bay Area-based vocalist backed by a quintet performing a variety of jazz tunes on this debut album).
BILLY MINTZ – “MINTZ QUARTET” – (Thirteenth Note)
(Veteran drummer of both LA and NY jazz scenes presents a debut release of his quartet and all original material from ballads, solos, and vocals, to up-tempo melodies and bluesy grooves. Also, Mintz will be performing at Jazz Live on Oct. 8th).
(Debut recording from this pianist who was recently named one of “Four Young Pianists on the Rise” by The New York Times. Member of the Dave Douglas Quintet and John Hollenbeck’s Claudia Quintet, here, he teams up with drummer/percussionist Ches Smith for a duet session integrating composition with improvisation resulting in 15 original pieces).
(33-player orchestra that emphasizes the healing power of improvised music with an emphasis on percussion traditions from across the globe. All music composed and conducted by world fusion/ jazz percussionist Adam Rudolph).

THE PLANET D NONET (PD9) – “RAYS OF THE SUN” – (Eastlawn Records)
(Co-led project featuring trumpeter/vocalist Michael Ray. PD9 has been playing and celebrating the music of Sun Ra for some time now, particularly live sessions at many Detroit jazz venues. Together with Ray, this release celebrates even more as they cover the music of the great Sun Ra. As a huge Ra fan, I’m a bit hesitant of other bands covering Ra’s music, but must say PD9 did a good job here. Check it out! – C.Fox).
GREGORY PORTER – “LIQUID SPIRIT” – (Blue Note)
(Critically acclaimed and Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter presents his third album backed by the same quintet as his second release. Porter sings warm and engaging melodies that tell stories and feelings from his personal experiences).
IMER SANTIAGO – “HIDDEN JOURNEY” – (Jazz Music City)
(Nashville-based trumpeter known for his Latin style of play displays his skills as a mainstream jazz instrumentalist with his debut effort. A quartet setting that features numerous special guests).
DAVID SILLS – “BLUE’S THE NEW GREEN” – (Gut String Records)
(SoCal saxophonist leading a quintet that features swinging originals alongside be-bop classics and standards from the American Songbook repertoire).
KENNY WHEELER – “SIX FOR SIX” – (Cam Jazz)
(Veteran Canadian trumpeter with his first real sextet recording since the early 80’s. A curious program offering 8 originals that possess melancholic lyricism and elegant swing).
