BIRTHDAY - Wednesday, February 12 - Buddy Childers [Wikipedia] 02/12/1926 Trumpeter St Louis, MO 2007
“...trumpeter and flugelhorn player, Buddy Childers, became a triple threat over the years: lead player, soloist and, ultimately, big band leader where his skills were on display in both capacities.”
“He left high school in Chicago at age 16 and latched on to the father image of Stan the Man. This was during World War II, when Uncle Sam was depleting the ranks of the big bands...eventually moved back to Los Angeles where he led his own big band until his passing in 2007. [The Beautiful Sound of Buddy Childers, Steven Cerra, Jazz Profiles]

“Maintaining an interest in jazz (officially regarded as treason by the Nazi Party) and staying out of trouble represented strictly minor-league intrigues during the Second World War. Nonetheless, it seems to be consistently worth noting that this artist was one of the few jazzmen of German or Austrian nationality who managed to continue performing during the conflict, despite or perhaps because of his status as a member of the German Army.” [Hans Koller, AllMusic Biography by Eugene Chadbourne]
